Deer Damage
It has recently come to the attention of the committee that commoners think there has been a substantial rise in the Forest deer population. Some think that deer numbers have increased to such an extent that they are now damaging the commoners’ interests. Please note that we are only talking about marauding deer which come onto holdings, standing grass, root crops, gardens etc, not those on the open forest.
In order to try to get some idea of the scale of the problem, we are conducting a short survey and would be grateful if you could answer a few questions about the deer population in your area.
If we find that there is a substantial problem of deer causing damage on private land, we will approach the Forestry Commission to discuss the issue further. Therefore, if you do have a problem on your land, and are willing to discuss the details with us, please include your name and contact number at the bottom of the survey form.

Survey of Deer on holdings in the New Forest

1. Where is your holding/land located (please give clear details: e.g. Brockenhurst; Whitley Ridge, so we can look at the distribution of deer across the Forest).

2. Do you think that there has been an increase in the deer population in recent years in your area?

3. Do you think that deer are causing damage to your holding (standing grass, grazing, roots, fencing (electric) etc)

If you have answered ‘No’ because you do not have a problem with deer on your land, please scroll down to the bottom of the page and submit your responses

If you do have problems could you answer the questions below, so that we can identify which areas of the Forest are being affected.

4. In which areas of your holding/land are deer a problem (please be quite specific about the area/place name, so that different groups of deer can be pinpointed: e.g. Brockenhurst: Whitley Ridge)

5. How many deer come in on a regular basis? (Please give approximate numbers, also the breed and sex of deer, if you know it)

Approximate number
Breed
Main sex of group

6. Could you give brief details of the scale and nature of the damage to your interests below, and include your contact details if you are happy for us to contact you about the problem. (Name and telephone number, Home address or email address)
